At least six members of the Sri Lankan touring party have been injured in a shooting incident in the Pakistani city of Lahore as their team bus made its way to the Gaddafi Stadium.
Preliminary reports from Lahore say that six security men and two civilians died as a group of masked assailants fired on the Sri Lankan convoy.
It is believed that Thilan Samaraweera, who only yesterday notched up a second consecutive double-century, and Tharanga Paranavitana are the most seriously injured with their shrapnel wounds being treated in a nearby hospital.
Kumar Sangakkara, Thilan Thushara, Ajantha Mendis and support staff member Paul Farbrace are also believed to be among the injured. All injuries to members of the Sri Lankan party are believed to be non-life threatening.
According to police, twelve masked assailants shrouded the bus in gunfire, first attacking the wheels before a grenade was thrown at the bus, but missed. Lahore police chief Habib-ur-Rehman said that the group "appeared to be well-trained terrorists".
The tour has been cancelled and Sri Lanka will return home on the next available flight.
