Vikram Solanki made a little bit of cricketing history this afternoon when he was substituted on for teammate Simon Jones during the first NatWest Challenge match against Australia.
At 1202 GMT, umpire Rudi Koertzen made the "T" signal, which resembles a basketball time-out, to allow Solanki to enter the field of play.
Jones finished with fine figures of 0-28 from 10 and a warning for running on the pitch before being told his work for the day was over. It was at the end of Jones' last over, the 31st of the innings, that Solanki, a much better fieldsman and capable batsman, assured himself a place in cricket club trivia nights for years to come.
After being replaced, Jones said it was not pre-planned as to whom would be substituted, only that it would be one of the tail-enders.
"I think Steve Harmison's quite jealous that I'm the lucky one," Jones told Sky Sports.
"I didn't bat well at Lord's when I was yorked so I think I was a prime candidate to be chosen.
"I'll hang around and watch the boys now!" he added.
It is likely that Australia will replace Damien Martyn with their super-sub, Brad Hogg, at the commencement of England's reply.
